Luke 22:1-4
He looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them, for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”
WORDS OF HOPE
When I was 14 years old, my parents took me on a vacation to Europe. When we visited Italy, we made a day trip to Pompeii since I was very interested in archeology. Touring the ruins and excavations of that amazing Roman city I was amazed at the condition it was in. Because the town was buried in volcanic ash it was as though tie had stopped. Shops, houses, temples were preserved as thought they were in a time capsule.
I was walking through the streets and a spot caught my eye. It was a very small round dark object. Picking it up I rubbed some of the dirt of it and found it was a tiny coin. Not realizing I was pilfering an antiquity I put the coin in my pocket and didn’t think anything of it until I got home to Texas. I washed it off and discovered it was a Roman coin, referred to as a Widow’s Mite. I still have it framed in my bedroom.
It is smaller than a dime and weighs almost nothing. Imagining the poor widow of Jesus’ story, giving two of these tiny coins really brings the story home. Her gift was inconsequential to the treasury, but it was all she owned. It reminds me that the size of the gift is not as important as what it means to the person giving it. It was truly an act of faith greater than all the wealthy bringing what for them could easily be replenished.
She didn’t expect anything in return for her gift. She knew it was not transactional. She knew God’s grace was free for the taking, yet she shared what she had. The story of her act of faith is the reward we all receive from her act. By giving those two coins, she revealed God’s grace to us all.
PRAYER
May we have the faith to give from our poverty or abundance not expecting anything in return. May we remember the grace we receive costs nothing but is worth more than all the money in the world.
Amen
