Mark 10:25
Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.
WORDS OF HOPE
I got into a recovery group over 35 years ago. I am grateful that since that day I have not found a need to use my drug of choice since. A big part of my recovery has been working the “12 Steps’. Three of them sound like something Jesus could have said.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
To me, it’s all about forgiveness and forgiving. I don’t work the steps to ask forgiveness, I do it to forgive and make amends. If I receive forgiveness, that’s an added benefit, not the goal.
I know a big part of my life I carried around grudges against others. A lot of times, those who I held a grudge against had no idea I felt that way. A lot of my making amends was a journey of discovery about me, not necessarily my effect on others.
So, I keep these words of Jesus in my mind at all times and try my best to start with forgiveness. It isn’t easy, but it always brings the blessing of grace to others and in the end, myself.
PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever.
Amen.
