SCRIPTURE
Matthew 9:2-5
And some people were carrying to him a paralyzed man lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, child; your sins are forgiven.” Then some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’?
WORDS OF HOPE
Many years ago, I had just had dinner with one of my clients at a ritzy restaurant and was leaving to get into my car. The parking lot was dark and I didn’t notice the dark figure in the back seat of my vehicle. As I got in and started the car, I felt a jolt. I thought I had been shocked by an electrical malfunction until I felt it again, this time on my head.
Blood flooded down my face and I turned around to discover a man with a wrench in my back seat with his hand raised about to strike me again. “Stop it!” I shouted at the top of my lungs. His face went blank and he fled the car.
Afterward, as the paramedics were taking me to a hospital, my client who had just entered the parking lot and saw the commotion rushed to my side. After asking if I was OK, he wanted to know why I didn’t carry a gun? I told him because I don’t want to kill anyone.
Later as I recalled the account to police, I realized that the guy in my car was a broken individual. Whether his action was malicious or just a reaction to being caught in the act, I will never know, but I didn’t feel hatred toward him, only pity and later forgiveness.
In this age of reactions and polarization we could learn a lot from Jesus. His forgiveness was not an act of blasphemy, it was an act of ministry.
PRAYER
May we carry the ministry of Jesus forward in our daily lives and remember the healing power of forgiveness.
