"If there's no one left in the living world to remember you, you disappear from this world. But you can change that!”
-Hector, (From the movie, ‘Coco’)
WORDS OF HOPE
Dia De Los Muertos
When I lived in Mexico City, I was fascinated by the preparations and festivities surrounding the annual Die De Los Metros. (Day of the Dead) The holiday falls on November 1-2 and corresponds to All Saints and All Souls days in the liturgical calendar.
Bakery windows are filled with Calaveras, or candy and cake skulls and on every street-corner are artisans selling skeleton dolls depicting every profession and role you can imagine. I had a full TV studio filled with miniature cameramen, technicians and actors. It made for a great centerpiece and a real conversation starter among friends who might not be familiar with the holiday.
It is not only a celebration of all our friends and relatives who have gone on before us but a time to reflect on mortality and our fleeting existence. It is far from a somber time and one tradition I really enjoyed was the writing and reciting of Calaveras Literarias. Short epigrams for friends and family who are still living. These are meant to be playful and humorous and not morbid or cynical and they remind us that the gift life is short and we must make the most of our days. I included a short translated one here.
The TV Chef
Here lies the famous TV chef,
who created a marvelous dish,
She called it “Death by Guacamole.”
And she finally got her wish!
PRAYER
God who hears our laughter and our tears, give us your guidance and strength to live lives that are memorable and leave legacies that honor your presence.
Amen
