Matthew 23:37-39
“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you, desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” ’
WORDS OF HOPE
I am reminded of Queen Evillene in the Wiz when I read this passage. Her song “Don’t Nobody Bring me No Bad News” is exactly the kind of attitude Jesus faced in Jerusalem. They were willing to “shoot the messenger” rather than listen. The bearer of bad news is rarely the cause of the problem, but the inability or unwillingness to hear it can make things worse.
I fall prey to that sometimes myself. I hear news that is just too painful or difficult to absorb and I ignore it or worse, discredit the source. I remember a few politicians who did the same thing. In my case and in theirs, the outcome of ignoring the reality of the situation did nothing to change it and in many cases only made it worse.
Accepting the world as it is and coming face to face with the truth is usually the best way to move past those rough spots in our lives. I am reminded of the Serenity Prayer at times when I get bad news.
PRAYER
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference. Amen.
