SCRIPTURE
John 15.13-15
There is no greater love than this;
to lay done one's life for one's friends.
You are my friends
if you do what I command you.
I no longer speak of you as servants,
for a servant does not know what the master is about.
Instead, I call you friends,
since I have made known to you all that I have learned
from my Abba.
WORDS OF HOPE
For today’s meditation, picture yourself as one of Jesus’ Disciples seated together for a meal. You have just heard Jesus speak the words of today’s Scripture reading. He has spoken to you and the other disciples about love before, but not in quite the same way as tonight.
What he has just said tonight is having much more of a personal impact. You now look at the other faces in the room and all the eyes are riveted on the face of Jesus. You look back at Jesus who has finished taking a sip of water and find that he is looking directly at you again.
You feel a burning sensation on your face and you wonder for a moment if you have had too much wine. In fact, you know that you haven't and that the feeling that is within you is being caused by the words that you are hearing from Jesus. You wonder if this time spent with him is meant to prepare you for something down the road not yet seen? Why is he telling you all these things tonight? Once again as he scans the faces in the room and your eyes meet and you feel that he wants you to pay particular attention to what he is about to say. You take a sip of wine and hear him say:
“It was not you who chose me,
it was I who chose you
to go forth and bear fruit.
your fruit must endure,
so that all you ask of God in my name,
it will give to you.
The command that I give you is this:
that you love one another.”
As Jesus continues to speak you can't help but drift a bit and wonder what his words mean for you. In what ways have you been chosen? How can Jesus call you a friend when sometimes you don't believe in him and sometimes even deny that you know him?
It has been a long day and it looks like it is going to be another long evening. But, you are looking forward to the traditional walk to the garden where you know that you can catch a few minutes of sleep while Jesus goes off to pray. Although not much is very clear at this point to you, of one thing you are certain. Your life has been touched by Jesus and will never be quite the same again.
PRAYER
May I always feel the joy and never forget the responsibility of being chosen by you. Amen.
