SCRIPTURE
Luke 6:43-45
“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; for each tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil, for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.
WORDS OF HOPE
I am a child of the 1950’s. Being a native Texan I became aware of Juneteenth very early in my life. We had a black housekeeper named Clara, and she taught me about the holiday when I was very young. Having been also raised in the Jewish faith, I understood the concept of enslaving a people and their liberation. She taught me a lot of other things including graciousness and kindness.
One Juneteenth she invited me to come with her and her husband Mitchel as they took the day off and went fishing. We lived very near White Rock Lake and at the time fishing there was pretty good, especially in the early morning. She and Mitchel patiently taught me to bait a hook and how to tease the fish to bite.
My favorite part of the day was after catching several catfish and crappie, taking them home to fry them for a delicious lunch. We sat around our kitchen table with my mother and ate our fill. Clara was good out of the good treasure her heart produced and I like to believe she helped guide me to do my best to bear good fruit myself.
PRAYER
May we remember all those who bore good fruit in our lives and may we seek to emulate their kindness and graciousness. Amen
