Matthew 13:10-13
Then the disciples came and asked him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” He answered, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For to those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance, but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. The reason I speak to them in parables is that ‘seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand.’
WORDS OF HOPE
As a teenager I was fascinated with chemistry and more specifically pyrotechnics. I began making fireworks, something that today would land me in federal custody but at the time I passed off as a science fair project to my folks. I researched the formulas and manufacture at the public library and actually was successful in making the rudimentary components of what I hoped would be a fireworks display.
While experimenting one day in our garage, I made up a firework that was supposed to be a “waterfall”. It was basically a small paper tube that contained the ingredients to emit a shower of silver sparks that would trail down like a fiery waterfall. I hung my test version from a wire frame in front of the garage door and attached a “qucikmatch” fuse to it. Lighting it, I stood back to watch my creation.
Silver sparks began to pour from the end as planned when suddenly I saw a bright flash. I didn’t hear anything, because the explosion of my experiment emitted such a deafening sound that I was rendered temporarily unable to hear anything. After running in circles in a panic, I finally sat down and began praying for my hearing to return.
After about half an hour I began to hear again, slowly recovering from the trauma of the explosion. Luckily, it was a quiet summer day, and no one was nearby to hear the boom. I learned a valuable lesson from that experiment and put away my chemicals and gave up my pyrotechnic quest.
I learned more from that experience than any words of caution could have conveyed. It was sticky.
Jesus understood that stories have a stickiness to them that can convey the underlying message far better than just speaking pronouncements. I believe if Jesus was speaking today, he might use memes. Good memes are essentially quick visual stories with an underlying message.
A good story unlocks something in our minds that hits the “pause” button on our fast-paced lives and makes us use a little critical thinking. Once we figure out the message underlying the story it sticks with us because it is something we have arrived at for ourselves. I believe it is a feature of our minds that we value those bits of information more since we have taken ownership of them.
PRAYER
God, may we listen to your message told through the stories of others and find the truth they convey. May they reveal your truth to us that we might share them with others. Amen
