SCRIPTURE
Mark 3:7-12
Jesus departed with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him; hearing all that he was doing, they came to him in great numbers from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the region around Tyre and Sidon. He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him, for he had cured many, so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him. Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and shouted, “You are the Son of God!” But he sternly ordered them not to make him known.
WORDS OF HOPE
This passage reminds me of seeing celebrities swamped with admirers and often unable to function in public without constantly being asked for pictures or autographs. Jesus was a victim of his own notoriety and resorts to putting several yards of water between himself and his followers.
Sounds like people were more interested in seeing him than listening to his message. That is something we should watch out for, even today. When we seek to see Jesus rather than hear Jesus we might just find ourselves on the shore watching him pull away in a boat.
I have no doubt that actually seeing Jesus had a profound effect on people. I also believe had I been there, I too would have fallen to my knees. But if all that happened was people were awestruck, blessed or healed and went no further, we would have never heard of Jesus today.
I believe it’s important to feel the grace and power of Christ in my life but it is also important to use the tools He gave me to not just spread the word, but to do the work. Having Jesus as a personal savior may feel good, but I believe it’s better to carry out His mission. Heal the sick, visit the captive, feed the hungry, and bring the kingdom of heaven to earth.
PRAYER
Let me always remember that “Faith without works is dead” and that I can best show my faith through my actions every day. Let me remember this and work to serve Jesus as best I can. Amen
