SCRIPTURE
Psalm 22:19 (NIV)
But you, Lord, do not be far from me. You are my strength, come quickly to help me.”
WORDS OF HOPE
Kumbaya
The words “kum ba yah”, are a rough translation of a prayer/song beseeching God to “Come By Here”, the cry of enslaved Africans living on islands just off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia. I can hardly imagine the pain and despair that inspired such a heart-wrenching prayer, but I know it was more devastating than anything I have ever experienced.
I remember joining hands with my college mates in the sixties and seventies, singing that very song with tears streaming down our cheeks. It is true that our pain was not so wretched as those who first sang those words, but we too were begging for justice. We were still yearning to see our fellow humans treated with respect, justice and dare I say, even kindness.
American slang has reduced the phrase “Kumbayah” to refer to an idealistic and unrealistic reach for harmony without meaningful action. I feel really sad about that for it seems to me to belittle the origins of the song and the efforts of the peace movements of the fifties, sixties, and seventies. Surely, we must honor all of the cries of those who came before us and all of the efforts. Though we still struggle, and we still must act, we must acknowledge those on whose shoulders we stand.
Our concerns have broadened to include other people who have been singled out as not deserving love, respect, and equality. I confess that even when I do what I can to change this, it is not near enough. I feel compelled to reach for the hands of my fellow followers of Jesus, so that we may join in a desperate prayer for God to “Come By Here!” It is the most effective thing we can do while we search for other ways to partner up with God to make it so!
PRAYER
Oh God, my ever-present help when I feel helpless, We need you now. Help me to see and do the things I can do to make a difference in this world of pain and injustice. Still, I know that my efforts alone are but a tiny though important part of what needs to be done, that needs to happen. So, I am asking, God, for miracles and mountain moving stuff. Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya. Kumbaya, my Lord, kumbaya. Someone's singing Lord, kumbaya. Someone's crying Lord, kumbaya, Someone's dying Lord, kumbaya, Someone’s praying Lord, Kumba!
