SCRIPTURE
Mark 8, 1-8
In those days when there was again a great crowd without anything to eat, he called his disciples and said to them, “I have compassion for the crowd because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way—and some of them have come from a great distance.” His disciples replied, ”How can one feed these people with bread here in the desert?” He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” Then he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed them to the crowd. They had also a few small fish, and after blessing them he ordered that these, too, should be distributed. They ate and were filled, and they took up the broken pieces left over seven baskets full.
WORDS OF HOPE
I often wonder if this story is really about loaves and fish or something else. The Bible is rife with metaphors and Jesus himself used them often in his parables. The crowd, noted at 4000, were all hungry, not just because they were in the desert, but they hungered for a message. A message from Jesus, the man they had heard so much about. They needed spiritual food as much as bread.
In this passage there is not much mention of what Jesus said, but if it was anything like his other sermons, it was not very long, but packed with spiritual nutrition. Like the sermon on the mount, I suspect his message was one of hope. A few choice words like those few small fish that inspired the crowd and fed them the message they longed for. When a people are ready to listen, to ingest the truth of a story, only a few words, a short and impactful statement can send them away full and inspired.
The disciples worried that there would not be enough for the large crowd, but it didn’t take a long oratory to capture their minds and spirits, just a few small fish.
PRAYER
May we always be ready to accept the spiritual food God offers us and be filled with the spirit after hearing a few well-chosen words. A great feast can be had with just seven loaves and a few small fishes. Amen
