SCRIPTURE
Mark 8:14-21
Now the disciples had forgotten to bring any bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out—beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.” They said to one another, “It is because we have no bread.” And becoming aware of it, Jesus said to them, “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes and fail to see? Do you have ears and fail to hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?” They said to him, “Twelve.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?” And they said to him, “Seven.” Then he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”
WORDS OF HOPE
Jesus must have been continually frustrated by his disciples. He would weave rich stories filled with powerful imagery and metaphor and yet his disciples could only grasp the stories, not the underlying meanings. This is one of those passages where Jesus loses his temper and berates them for missing the point.
I suspect he would be equally frustrated at the way many people interpret his words. They take the stories at face value and do not look beneath the surface for the deeper meanings. Much like the book of Jonah, we often read a story about a man being swallowed by a big fish and don’t see the epic tale of a prophet running from God.
His disciples were taking his words at face value and not looking for the real meaning. His disciples did not understand that the “Yeast of the Pharisees” was the hypocrisy of their laws and how the real “bread” were his teachings. Today, we would do well to listen to Jesus once again and look to God for truth and not to man-made institutions.
PRAYER
May our eye never fail to see and our ears never fail to hear the words of Jesus and let them keep us from hardening our hearts. Amen
