Mark 4:30-32
He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”
WORDS OF HOPE
As a child I remember seeing one of my classmates in Elementary school wearing a glass bauble around her neck. In it was a mustard seed. I asked her to explain it to me and she merely said it was a symbol of her faith and left it at that.
I loved Chinese food and particularly was a fan of the hot mustard that was served with egg rolls. I imagined that what she meant was that her faith was spicy and hot like that mustard. I never shared that belief with her, but today, I think it might not be far from wrong for my faith journey.
Like mustard, my faith often burns my tongue, especially when I find myself speaking uncomfortable truths. It warms my body and gives my food a little kick. I believe faith should not just be comforting and calming but should sometimes awaken me and send me dashing for water.
My faith is what makes the food of my life taste better. It brings awareness of what God is doing in my life and sometimes guides me toward uncomfortable places. And that’s a good thing. It keeps me honest and keeps me examining my faith and beliefs every day. I have to nurture them so that as I grow, they sprout into that big leafy plant.
PRAYER
May the seeds of our faith take root and flourish. May our acts tend them carefully and provide light and life-giving water. May our faith provide shade to those seeking refuge and become a nesting place for those who feel lost.
Amen
