SCRIPTURE
Mark 16:1-6
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here.
WORDS OF HOPE
At Jewish funerals, the casket is never open. This is perhaps because no embalming is allowed, but I had it explained to me when my father died that the closed casket was so he would live in my memory as the vibrant and amazing human being he was.
I think of that when reading this passage and one from Luke 24:5, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?”
Seeking to somehow preserve the body after death is a futile exercise, because without life the body is only a pale shell of the person who once lived. This was further driven home to me in my youth. When offering condolences my Jewish relatives often used the phrase, “may their memory be a blessing.” There is no sorrow in that phrase, only the reassurance that the memory of that person will live within us forever.
Perhaps that was the message here, that we must look for Jesus not among the dead but among the living. We can see Jesus in every person we meet and in doing so will awaken to His spirit that lives within us as well.
PRAYER
Great mystery of God, may we find the tombs of our lives empty, and yet find assurance that all those who have gone before us will live in our lives in memory and in spirit. May we turn loss into hope and memories into blessings. Amen
