MODERN READING
WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED
to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom
-From the Charter of the United Nations.
WORDS OF HOPE
Today is United Nations Day, and the above passage taken from the United Nations Charter represents an ideal that could be attributed to any faith path. Unfortunately, like many ideals, it is easier said than accomplished. But I think it is important that we look at those ideals, and that all peoples look to their faith to see how those ideals fit and can be an acted upon by Faith tradition, even those who may not have such a tradition.
So where can we look in our own faith tradition to find some of these ideals? In either of the Testaments of the Christian faith, there are many stories that exemplify these ideals and though many of these stories reflect the treatment of one person, the ideal can be spread on a wider field.
The good Samaritan would not be one person but could apply to a city or a nation. What if it were so?
When Jesus said that the one who is without sin cast the first stone, he meant that in the context of dealing with one person’s sin. But what if that concept could be applied in the relationships of nations?
What if the statements such as those found in Exodus admonishing not to wrong or oppress a resident alien were part of every nation’s homeland security plan?
What if all nations operated on the concept that to those to whom much is given, much is expected?
No doubt there are other such examples and I entreat you as part of your devotional time to think on that idea of applying what may seem to be interpersonal to things that are international. And reflect not only on how we as individuals can exemplify these ideals, but also on how we can make it clear that we expect our nation to serve “as a shining city on the hill“ to all nations.
PRAYER
Loving Creator, be with each of us each day. Be with our leaders each day. Let us through our personal examples and our choices in life, and in our leaders reflect the ideals of full humanity we would all wish to have.
