SCRIPTURE
Psalm 16:7-8
I will bless the Lord, my God, who gives me counsel and comfort. Because you are at my right hand [and in my constant presence], I shall not live in fear.
WORDS OF HOPE
In the New Testament’s pastoral letter, I Peter 5:7, the writer encourages Christians in Rome near the end of the first Christian Century: “Cast all of your anxiety on God, because God cares for you.” They lived in a time of extreme uncertainty filled with persecution, possible forced exile, torture and death. Things had been turned upside down and that down-side wasn’t pleasant!
Some of us today may feel that our world has met a similar fate; one which is filled with anxiety and fear. It is easy to say, “I’ll cast away my fear and let God take care of things”. But, I Peter 5:6 tells us to “humble yourself under the hand of God”. We need to devote our lives to God’s will and purpose. Then we can cast-off our anxiety and be assured that God will guide us through these uncertain times.
During Lent, I hope that each of us can meditate on these words of comfort from Psalm 27. “The Lord is my [guiding] light and my salvation; what shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, of what shall I be afraid?” One thing I have asked of the Lord, and I will seek after it: to live with the presence of God all the days of my life.
I meditate on the words: “Teach me your way, O Lord, and lead me on a level path”, even when the path meanders through my anxiety. I know that God will never give me up to fear and I believe that I will see the goodness of the Lord, if I look hard enough in the world around me if I am intent in my search and if I have patience. I especially meditate on verses 13 and 14 of that Psalm: “Wait for the Lord, be strong and let your heart take courage.”
PRAYER
Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge. May I always remember, God, you are my Lord. All that I have which is good is provided by you. Help me to always reflect on your blessings even in these times of distress.
