John 8. 31-32
…Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
WORDS OF HOPE
On July 04, 1996, I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. It was an extremely hot day, not unusual for Dallas in early July. A group of friends and I decided an air-conditioned activity would be a good idea for celebrating Independence Day and seeing a movie would be a good choice. We went to see one opening that day titled, appropriately, “Independence Day.” Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, and John Adams were not among the all-star cast, but several massive inter-stellar cruisers staffed with evil olive-green aliens were.
The aliens seemed to be obsessed with the notion of blowing up every iconic Washington landmark as well as their counterparts in every major city on the planet, all through the best explosion special effects that the mid-nineties had to offer. Their nefarious efforts resulted in all the nations of the world uniting to annihilate their common enemy. The US President, who also happened to be a fighter pilot, was eloquent in his parting speech as he boarded his waiting jet:
“We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: ‘We will not go quietly into the night!’"
We won.
It was not the best of movies, but we did achieve our goal of staying cool for a couple of hours and who doesn’t like to watch massive explosions interspersed with Judd Hirsh’s Catskill resort-style commentary as comedy relief? The running theme of the film was the fact that the only way the world can ever unite as a community is to unite to defeat a common dastardly enemy; united in war, but forever divided in peace.
27 years later, the world doesn’t seem to have changed a lot. I’m not certain that even an alien invasion would alter the divisive attitudes of several world leaders, and factions within our nation itself appear to be even less flexible. So many of us are best united in our opinions about who we fear, and therefore hate, within our own borders.
The last verse of today’s Scripture was the motto of my high school. (“You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.”) The truth is now and has always been that the hatred of mutual enemies or of each other will never unite us or set us free. Jesus’ life and teachings of universal love is the only truth we need to know and to practice. Then maybe some future 4th of July could be a day free of fear and hatred. That truly would be our own Independence Day.
PRAYER
God of love and giver of freedom, may we know independence from the fears that reduce our neighbors to the ranks of mythical movie villains. May we see each other through the unclouded vision of Jesus.
