SCRIPTURE
1 John 4.20
If someone says, “I love God,” and hates a sister or brother, that person is a liar; for the ones who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen.
WORDS OF HOPE
The Weapon of Love
Many of us are hurting, and the cries for justice are being heard from every corner, from every home, and around the world. In our pursuit of justice, the words of Martin Luther King ring in a pitch so clear, and so pure that they must be remembered. In honor of his memory, and in all of the lives that we have lost to senseless violence, I want to offer a small quote from Martin Luther King.
He says, “As you press on for justice, be sure to move with dignity and discipline using only the weapon of love. Let no man pull you so low as to hate him. Always avoid violence. If you succumb to the temptation of using violence in your struggle, unborn generations will be the recipients of a long and desolate night of bitterness. And your chief legacy, to the future, will be an endless reign of meaningless chaos.”
Let’s do our best. Let’s stand together with dignity and discipline to preserve the legacy of the great Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and this great nation.
PRAYER
Great Spirit,
We are a world turning in our beds, never finding comfort. Our pain comes from wounds too deep to reach. For countless nights we have cried ourselves to sleep, but never finding rest. How long will the wicked be allowed to oppress us? How long will we look for justice, and find only disappointment in her place? There is nothing new under the sun. Therefore, we will praise You. Our God is a God of justice, equity, and righteousness. By Your word You created the Earth and all that dwell therein. You established the oceans and told them how far they could go. Wisdom is in Your right hand and understanding is in Your left.
Let every voice praise the Lord! We do not call on one who does not hear, does not see, or does not feel. You are righteous, and Your love endures forever. Praise You God, for Your blessing is for the righteous, and Your curse is for the wicked. May we honor You by never doubting You. May we be faithful to You as You have been faithful to us. Amen.
