SCRIPTURE READINGS
Jesus: ‘But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:27 -30
Buddha: Hatred’s do not ever cease in this world by hating, but by love … Overcome anger by love, overcome evil by good. Overcome the miser by giving, overcome the liar by truth. Dhammapada 1.5 & 17.3
Good and evil are not equal. Repel evil with good, and the person who was your enemy becomes like an intimate friend." (Quran 41:34)
WORDS OF HOPE
In a recent discussion with my wife, and in our small group, we contemplated how often there are parallels in the teachings of the various great “religious teachers”. The first two Passages above come from one of my favorite books, “Jesus and Buddha, the Parallel Sayings” by Marcus Borg. The third comes from the Quran through Mohammed. Similar sayings can be found in Judaism, Sikhism, Zorastrianism, and all others.
They are all messages of love.
Our discussion centered on the idea that perhaps all of these great teachers, and they were and are great teachers, were sent by that power that Christians refer to as God to give us a message on how to live our lives. And we further contemplated that perhaps each one of these messengers, somehow or another did not get their message through in a way that caused all people to follow them. And so new messengers were sent in the hopes that humankind would finally get the message. It was even suggested that perhaps the messengers and the message were the same each time. An intriguing thought if nothing else.
These three short passages seem to illustrate that the ultimate message of all belief systems is a message of love. And even if we do not necessarily buy into the circumstances by which the belief systems have come to us, it will be hard to deny the reality of the message. The creator loves us. The creator wants us to love each other. Love. it would seem might be the basis of creation itself.
As you go through the week, keep your eyes out for instances where you see love expressed. Not just in those circumstances where you expect to see it, not just at the food bank, not just at the church or the synagogue or the temple. But in the simple respect that you see, one person offering to another. There will be many instances of the opposite of that happening. But keep an eye out for those simple acts of kindness. Because there you will see love, and there you will see God.
PRAYER
Great Creator, it is in your love for us, and then the love your messengers have brought to us that bring about the very existence we all share. Love us unconditionally. Help us to love each other in that same way, Amen.
