SCRIPTURE
Kings 6:7-14
The house was built with stone finished at the quarry, so that neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron was heard in the temple while it was being built.
The entrance for the middle story was on the south side of the house: one went up by winding stairs to the middle story, and from the middle story to the third. So, he built the house and finished it; he roofed the house with beams and planks of cedar. He built the structure against the whole house, each story five cubits high, and it was joined to the house with timbers of cedar.
Now the word of the Lord came to Solomon, ‘Concerning this house that you are building, if you will walk in my statutes, obey my ordinances, and keep all my commandments by walking in them, then I will establish my promise with you, which I made to your father David. I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.’
So Solomon built the house, and finished it.
WORDS OF HOPE
I am often intrigued by how differently things are presented in what we call the Old Testament when compared with the teachings of what we call the New Testament. This passage from the book of Kings about the building of the temple in Jerusalem is one such case. The first six verses, which I did not quote, contain a lot of measurement information in cubits. But the verses cited give more information into the details of the look and feel of the temple. The fact that there would be no sound of hammer or ax or tool of iron. The wood used. And finally an admission from God about following all the commandments, not just the ten we hear about most, but the rather large number that actually exist, in order to guarantee God‘s presence with the Israelites.
In modern times we say frequently and across the denominations that the church is not the building; it is the people. You hear this most often when some disaster hits a church such as a fire or flood or hurricane. But you also see it reflected in areas such as church growth. As we go through the season of the anniversary of the founding of Cathedral of Hope, we were reminded that what started with 12 people has grown to a large community of the faithful. And no doubt some of those who have been around through various buildings can look back wistfully at what has gone before. But I think it’s fair to say that they would not want to go back to those early times; and for many reasons.
But the passage from Kings tells us something about the way the Israelites viewed God and the way the Israelites felt God viewed them. They had God in a house. It was a house that they had built. And even though they believed it was built in accordance with the wishes of God, it still was a way for them to keep God around. This is not a universal vision of God. It is not even a personal vision of God. It comes as a national vision of a national God held in place in a nation-built temple in the heart of the nation. This is a God who can, and sometimes does leave behind the people when they are disobedient. When they do not follow a strict set of rules and the structures that they believe come from God and are interestingly interpreted by human beings.
How different and how diverse are our modern views of God that come from an interpretation of the words of Jesus. There are many examples of this difference. Where two or more gathered, there God is. Your body is a temple. If we love one another, God lives in us.
This is not a national God. This is a God of all nations. This is not a God of one people. This is a God of all. This is not a God that lives in a Stone house. This is a God that lives in the hearts of all humans. This is not a God who leaves us behind when we are disobedient. This is a God who is always there, even when we in disobedience have walked away. This is the
God of us.
PRAYER
God, you live in our hearts. Free us from the stone house of our ego and let us live as Your dwelling place. Let others see You in us so they may see You in themselves. Amen
