He told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.”
John 6: 12
WORDS OF HOPE
After my partner Joyce died, I wanted her great nieces, who were young and sorrow-filled, to have something of hers. In the closet, still hanging in neat rows, were her casual shirts—chambray, denim, flannel—reds and blues and grays. So I gathered these up, found a place that made quilts, and drove out there. Though it was many years ago, I still remember the feel of the shirts in my hands and the tightness in my throat as I offered them to the quiltmaker, entrusting her with the precious task.
When the artist had finished, I went to pick up the gift so that the girls could unwrap it on Christmas morning. In some small way, I wanted them to feel the comfort of Joyce’s never-ending love when they wrapped themselves in it.
The scripture above is John’s ending to the story of the loaves and fishes. “Gather up the fragments,” Jesus directs, “so that nothing may be lost.”
So much has been torn and broken and fragmented in our world over the past years. Perhaps one of our spiritual tasks in this age is to learn how to make something beautiful or useful from the pieces.
In one of her powerful blessings, Jan Richardson gives us a key to that process:
This blessing
knows the secret
of the fragments
that find their way
into its keeping,
the wholeness
that may hide
in what has been
left behind,
the persistence of plenty
where there seemed
only lack.
In the world of God’s economy, nothing is ever wasted—the fragments of a broken life or relationship, a society torn asunder by hatred, injustice, and lies, nature damaged by greed, denial, and lack of political will. Today I invite you to spend some time in prayer and hear Jesus’ direction to gather up the fragments, so that nothing may be lost.
Look into the hollows
of your hands
and ask what wants to be
gathered there,
what abundance waits
among the scraps
that come to you,
what feast
will offer itself
from the pieces
that remain.*
PRAYER
You who create out of the void, who restore the broken, who resurrect the dead, teach us to hold the fragments of our lives and our world and make something beautiful and just. Amen.
