What wings are to birds and sails to ships, so is prayer to the human soul. - Corrie ten Boom
WORDS OF HOPE
Corrie ten Boom was a Dutch watchmaker and Christian public speaker and writer who worked with other members of her family in aiding the Jewish people to escape from Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Her classic book, The Hiding Place, relates the harrowing details of those efforts centering on the hope she found in God while she herself was also imprisoned in the camps where she learned to develop a profound relationship to the divine through prayer.
She often used the analogy in today’s reading which came from the Desert Fathers/Mothers 2000 years ago. Living simply in the harsh Egyptian desert, these Christian hermits focused their existence on the bare human essentials as they strived for a humble and pure lifestyle. Prayer became their main activity as they looked unto God for both essential nourishment and wisdom.
To many of our spiritual ancestors, prayer communion with God was like breath in that both breath and prayer were essential to living. Prayer became the defining feature of their lives. At a distance, catching sight of one of these hermits was to see a living prayer. They realized that neither a bird nor sailing ship could leave one place and safely arrive at its destination without its wings and sails. So it is with the Christian, a vibrant spiritual life requires prayer communion with God...incessant prayer; otherwise, there is no progress in the spiritual life.
The Season of Lent is the perfect time of year to explore a deeper relationship with God by taking the time to expand our prayer lives in order to experience God’s nourishment to our spirits. Corrie ten Boom as well as the Desert Fathers and Mothers recognized prayer as one of the bare human essentials of living. Following those teachings would put us in the best of company for the Season and far beyond.
PRAYER
O God, our prayer for each of us is to gain Lenten inspiration from these Dutch quotations, other readings from your faithful followers of the past, and the nourishment of your Living Presence for guidance as we pray for the wisdom to serve you best.
