The movement of the Spirit of God in the hearts of men and women often calls them to act against the spirit of their times or causes them to anticipate a spirit which is yet in the making. In a moment of dedication, they are given wisdom and courage to dare a deed that challenges and to kindle a hope that inspires. ~ Howard Thurman
WORDS OF HOPE
At the beginning of Black History Month, I am reminded of the inspiring words of Howard Thurman, an important voice for our time. In response to his challenging words, I offer this prayer: May the living presence of Christ Jesus fill my life with your LOVING presence.
We need fuel for that coming movement of the Spirit of God in the hearts of men and women! This is a fuel request which is important... fuel for the soul! We often ask for help to empower our tangible action's needs for strength, patience, etc. Divine loving presence is different. It's like a lubricant to smooth off our rough edges of thought and behavior with an accepting love, and that love is not measured or controlled like most human love.
Instead, divine loving presence that calls us to act against the spirit of our times is an abundant and welcoming type of love for another person in need which allows us to have true spiritual fellowship with them. It is not the strong and steady hand which reaches out with food for the hungry or a blanket for those who are cold. Divine loving presence acts like a bridge of loving respect which connects two people together, a relationship sealed in God's love. It cannot be forced or faked with a smile plastered around the words, "God bless you".
This type of love simply flows forth from a person without effort or spiritual thought. It is truly the movement of the Spirit of God which passes through one person to another and is not part of (or owned by) the individual who expresses it. We become a channel for the God love be expressed. So, now you realize why we must ask for the living presence of God to provide it for our interactions with others. It is not of our making, not a product of our faith; it is an overflowing, divine fuel bubbling forth in our love, care, words and welcoming kindness for others.
Its only source is God! Therefore, we must constantly be willing to let it flow through us and all of our words and actions; because it is the love of God which envelops our interactions with others. In that “moment of dedication [we] are given wisdom and courage to dare a deed that challenges and to kindle a hope that inspires.”
PRAYER
Thank you for the wise words of Howard Thurman that remind us to be ready at all times for the movement of your Spirit within us. Amen
