SCRIPTURE
WORDS OF HOPE
The sign on the cage said “Mr. Tuna” and it always made me smile. I had seen him often while getting pet food and each time he looked more forlorn than the last. So, one day I ventured over for a closer look at this big white cat with orange patches and beautiful golden eyes. His card said, “very friendly” and “talks a lot”. I laughed out loud, that’s what my grade school report cards said too. I discovered he had been in foster care because he was a larger, older cat and had been brought back 3 times for being so vocal. Now I’m hooked!
On the way home I told him I understood how difficult it is to be imperfect and I promised to love him unconditionally, no matter what. That’s when I thought about Gods relentless, pursuing love for all people. So, I prayed for patience, endurance, and peace with Mr. Tuna as we embarked on this new journey.
God made a promise to love us from everlasting to everlasting and never gives up or sends us back. At our lowest points, God will greet us with an endless love. That same love, despite our ways, will be offered in the midst of trials, even when that love is unreturned. God has been reaching for us, to shower us with love, way before we ever started reaching out to God.
In human form, Jesus revealed God is persistently tender, compassionate, and forgiving. We are unconditionally accepted just the way we are, loved in spite of our frailties and often because of them.
I am grateful for this cat. There were moments early on when the very vocal Mr. Tuna pushed our relationship to the edge then just as equally, he revealed his loving, tender and vulnerable side. He has been and continues to be a great reminder that unconditional means without conditions, always!
PRAYER
Creator God give us the courage to love others unconditionally whether it’s a neighbor or a cat that talks to much! In Jesus name, Amen.
