2 Corinthians 12.8-10
Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But God said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
WORDS OF HOPE
Can you remember a time in your life when you did not just pray, but pleaded with God for deliverance from what seemed to be an impossible situation? Throughout the Bible, we see examples of this kind of urgent need. The writers frequently lived in desperate times, just as we often do in this unpredictable world.
Through meditative readings of Scripture, we see examples how the people of God responded to difficult and uncertain times in their personal and societal lives. The constant factor all of it is that a loving God is always present to help guide the transformation and create a new and better life. To those who are faithful to God, there will be new opportunities to forge a renewed personal spiritual communion with the Divine and new ways to express our spirituality in worship and social interactions.
However, Paul, the writer of 2 Corinthians learned, God usually asks for personal cooperation in the transformation process of bad events into good. We must persist in our faithfulness to God as we live through these difficult and uncertain days. Regardless how bad things become, we can obediently wait, listen and work with God's desire for this change. We can place absolute trust in the all-goodness and mercy of God.
Where do we find these words of inspiration and comfort in the scripture? Do a Google Search sometime and type in something like: “Bible verses about desperate times.” Copy and paste the ones that speak to you most. Then, sit in silence and invite the Holy Spirit to guide you.
PRAYER
Comforting God, may the readings from your Holy Book give us special guidance in the week ahead. Thank you for the writers of these words and the many sources where we can find them. We know that you are always there. Amen
