SCRIPTURE
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
God teach me to offer you a heart of thanksgiving and praise in all my daily experiences of life. Teach me to be joyful always, to pray continually and to give thanks in all my circumstances. I accept them as Your will for my life.
WORDS OF HOPE
We have had another year of blessings!
I hope if you have not already started a Thankful November you will consider it. You may remember that I encourage my friends on Facebook to be thankful every day in November and post their thankfulness for all to see! One day to sit down with our family and friends and say a quick thank you to God is hardly enough gratitude for 365 days of the blessings we receive.
Sometimes we do not realize how blessed we are until we experience a loss or problem! Remember how we missed seeing our friends and family when Covid caused us to be isolated? Do not wait for something like that to happen again to be thankful for the times we get to spend with our families and friends.
As you go about your day, if you are mindful, you will realize hundreds of blessings that flow into your life each day. I open my eyes in my warm home on a cold day and enjoy my coffee and kitties my wife brings me! A perfect blessing for retirement! And I am thankful for the jobs I had to build up Social Security and a retirement income. And I go to the Arboretum to volunteer and see how beautifully God blesses our world in nature. And I am blessed with the friends I make there!
And my church blesses me with ways to give to my community in need all year through donating to BACH and ICare and Taste of Hope and Blessing Bags. But November provides the biggest opportunity and the oldest tradition- the Thanksgiving Baskets. Cathedral of Hope has been doing this amazing ministry for many years. The day they are collected and given away, we are most the church of Christ- doing unto others! Seeing the church come together bringing food for a complete Thanksgiving meal to feed a family is very rewarding. Seeing the church giving these gifts of love to those who may not have the means to provide this feast for their families makes your heart grow several sizes! Please sign up to bring a basket or see if your life group can join together to purchase one.
And as the weather turns cold, please look in your closet for unused coats and buy socks and gloves when you are shopping. Our food programs need warm clothing, coats and gloves to give to those who receive the food we provide. Winter is a challenge for people living on the streets. While you are being thankful for what you have, please remember to also show your gratitude by helping those who have fewer physical blessings than you have.
Let us make this a truly thankful November!
PRAYER
God of amazing blessings, help us be thankful and help us show our gratefulness by helping others.
