SCRIPTURE
Ephesians 4:14
… we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming.
WORDS OF HOPE
I have a very good longtime friend, although I don’t see her as much as I used to, her presence and personality still linger in my mind. Without revealing her identity, let’s just say her name is Sue.
One hot and humid day I asked Sue if she was going to the pride parade. But the answer I got made me laugh. “You’re not gonna see me there. I don’t do heat! I stop doing heat a long time ago.“ She was clear-cut. Decisive; a stake in the ground for saying this far, no farther. I will I not allow myself to experience the discomfort of being in the Texas summer heat because I cannot control it.
It was beautifully orchestrated and well thought out. It made me think of what things in my life could I put on the chopping block in the same manner as Sue’s declaration about the heat. Do you have those things? Have you ever made a decision about something or even someone that just needs to be gone from your life, forever and ever?
It might be certain foods, or places you’ve been, or it might even be negative people, or a specific kind of experience you never want to have again. Sue didn’t know that day that she initiated in me some sort of a carefree, liberating feeling that can just be said for those things I’m done with… “I don’t do that!” I owe nobody an explanation for my decision and I’ve made it and that’s final.
Sue’s honest answer reminded me of the time that the religion of a fear-based exclusive church ceased to be a necessary component of my life. “I don’t do fear. I don’t do exclusion. I don’t do hate.” I had said to myself. They didn’t recognize the Season of Lent, but what an appropriate time of year to give up that brand of poison.
That was not the only chopping- block experience in my life, but it was one that opened a new world for me. In your Lenten journey this year, are you meditating about life and granting yourself the choice necessary to move forward without any kind of regret or looking back?
What’s on your chopping block today?
PRAYER
Loving God, remind us every day that we are no longer living as children, confined by rules we do not understand, prisoners of doctrines devoid of your love, crafted in deceit for the benefit of a few to the detriment of many. Help me to declare, “I don’t do that.” Amen
