SONG OF INSPIRATION
Onward, Christian soldiers, Marching as to war
Author: S. Baring-Gould
Verse 3
Like a mighty army
moves the church of God;
[Siblings], we are treading
where the saints have trod;
We are not divided;
all one body we,
One in hope and doctrine,
one in charity.
Refrain:
Onward, Christian soldiers,
marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
going on before!
WORDS OF HOPE
Today is War on Poverty Day
Get ready to join the fight against poverty on January 8 for War on Poverty Day! This day was first declared by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 as a part of his "Great Society" campaign, with the goal of reducing and ultimately eliminating poverty in the United States. It's a day to raise awareness about this ongoing issue and take action to help those in need. From volunteering at local shelters or food banks, to donating to charities that aid low-income families, there are many ways you can make a positive impact on this day. Let's come together and make a difference!
War on Poverty Day is an important reminder that poverty is still a prevalent issue in our society. It helps to bring attention to the struggles faced by those living in poverty and encourages people to take action towards creating change.
Nearly 29 percent of Dallas homes make less than $25,000 a year. More than 27,000 Dallas residents live in poverty despite holding full-time employment.
Dallas has the highest number of people living 185 percent below the poverty line of any city in America. It has the second highest number of people living 100 percent below the poverty line behind only Philadelphia, Pa.
Forty-eight percent of Dallas single mothers live in poverty, crippling their ability to provide for their children. That number has steadily grown since 2005.
Thirty-eight percent of Dallas children live in poverty. Twenty-eight percent of them have inadequate food and nutrition.

Fortunately, I am not in that group of people in Dallas who are below the poverty line! I hope those of you reading this are also blessed enough to not be in that category. Those of us who are so blessed need to see what we can do to help those who end up in the struggles of poverty!
One thing I do is shop for our Pack the Pantry at Cathedral of Hope on the last Sunday of each month. I also am an auto giver to Cathedral of Hope whose multiple ministries focus on making life better for people in Dallas living below the poverty line or needing food help.
Though I do not physically help, I witness on Thursdays the food rescue program where members of CoH provide the awesome fresh food for neighbors in need. They can come to CoH and receive a large box of fresh fruit and vegetables and sometimes meat and milk and even pies! I met one precious couple during December who walked to our church from the apartment they had just moved to. They were blown away by the gift of the food they could receive from us weekly!
CoH volunteers rescued hundreds of thousands of pounds of food that has been donated in 2023! CoH uses it to fix meals for the homeless and to share with other agencies who feed people in need and to do "pop up" distribution of food!
Cathedral of Hope feeds the souls of those who gather on Sunday to worship, but the actual feeding of bodies happens all week long! As we are blessed, we can give our offerings to help feed to bodies of people in need throughout our city of people who live below the poverty line - many who live WAY below the line!
Our "war" on poverty is a daunting "fight" just in Dallas. But at Cathedral of Hope we are like the Christian soldiers in the song. CoH is marching with our van full of food and our volunteers cooking meals to serve and deliver to the hungry in Dallas! Please join our march to help feed all we can in Dallas as our part in the War on Poverty.
PRAYER
God of unending love, help those of us blessed with abundance to be generous to those in need.
