SCRIPTURE
Romans 12:10-13
"Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality."
WORDS OF HOPE
Last year, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy published an advisory entitled Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation. In it, he highlights the profound and growing public health crisis of loneliness and social isolation in America. He outlines the detrimental effects of these issues on mental, physical, and emotional well-being, pointing to rising rates of chronic conditions such as heart disease, depression, and premature death linked to social disconnection.
My Presbyterian colleague Sallie recently led her staff in a book study of Generations by Jean Twenge, where she reports in one chapter about an increase in depression among Gen Z, those young adults who came of age at the same time the iPhone was introduced. Twenge provides clinical proof of an alarming decrease in mental health and an increase in depression in this generation.
Both authors call for a collective societal response to address the epidemic, emphasizing the importance of building stronger, more supportive social connections. My Presbyterian colleague suggests one idea, among many, that the church does exceedingly well: The Potluck.
Paul writes about this in the twelfth chapter of Romans when he exhorts the church to “Be devoted to one another in love” and to “Practice Hospitality”. All of scripture literally emphasizes the importance of community as a way to alleviate loneliness, both in our relationship with God and with community.
We enter a season that can be the loneliest time for those who are separated from loved ones for a host of reasons. We can’t prescribe “cheer” for everyone. Sallie suggests that alleviating loneliness doesn’t involve heroics or a lot of time or money. It can be a simple as hosting a potluck, inviting a neighbor to attend a Christmas concert, attending a program on Kwanzaa, or taking a plate of cookies. And having a lifeline in place if you yourself need it to reach out to someone in your own time of loneliness. My friend Sallie’s summation: Listen. Connect. Relate. Cook.
As a community and each one of us have the tools, the heart, the spatula, and the faith to make a difference.
PRAYER
In this season of joy and celebration, we lift up to You those who feel the weight of loneliness. Lord, You know their hearts, their pain, and the empty spaces where they long for companionship, warmth, and connection. How can we wrap them in loving arms and remind them that they are never truly alone? Help us to show kindness, offer a listening ear, and bring a casserole. Amen.
