SCRIPTURE
WORDS OF HOPE
Did you ever try to do a good deed that exploded into a wonderful thing that blessed many people?
I had a friend who was called into active duty in Afghanistan when that conflict was active. I felt helpless to be of comfort to her and kept asking what I could send to make her deployment more bearable. She kept responding to my emails that she had everything she needed. Eventually she said she found a need if I really wanted to send something. Children outside her base had no shoes! If I could gather up some shoes and send them, that would give her joy.
I started by asking the parents of children’s group at Cathedral of Hope if they had gently used shoes from their children they could bring. As word spread, we placed boxes at the front doors of the church for people to donate shoes!
Shoes started pouring in! The children in our Children’s program emptied the boxes each week and tied laces together or figured out ways to be sure each pair would stay together. They kept count of the magic of the number of shoes arriving.
A worker in the children’s ministry asked his company to furnish boxes and ship those we gathered. I had not expected so many shoes, so had not thought through the cost of shipping a lot of shoes! Eventually they reached their limit. Soon after that relative asked if they could donate money to help. I asked if they minded their money going for shipping.
Eventually we collected a total of 500 children’s shoes! Talk about “ask and you shall receive!” We were all blown away.
We displayed the last 200 shoes under the Esparanza window and said special prayers over them during worship services before they were shipped. Each person who donated shoes, each child who helped empty the box on Sundays and count the shoes, each person who prayed for the children receiving the shoes, and each soldier who helped give away the shoes were blessed!
My friend was blown away by the generosity of Cathedral of Hope! Her fellow soldiers were amazed. The precious children who received those shoes were happy.
We may not be able to bring world peace. BUT 500 children in Afghanistan know some people in America care enough to send them a pair of shoes!
PRAYER
God of all good gifts, help us as we give of our resources to those in need everywhere.
