SCRIPTURE
Matthew 7.7
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
WORDS OF HOPE
Today, the weather in Dallas has cooled down from the triple digits. My incentive to go for walks in the park has come back, so I don’t have to set my alarm before sunrise. To be honest, I never did, I just walked a lot less. Today it’s 70° out. It’s 40° cooler than it was on a typical day a couple of weeks ago. It feels like fall, finally.
The huge blessing of today’s walking in the park was passing by two senior women, who were praying together. It was a sweet scene, both sitting on a park bench. As I walked past them, the one woman, praying out loud, said “Lord just give me the strength to do the things I have to do today”. There was a lot more to it that I missed, but that alone made me happy for the timing. She was so sincere and perhaps revealing her inner most feelings. I wondered what her life is like.
On the path, I started thinking about a conversation I recently had with an atheist friend of mine. It seems like those conversations are always about the same questions that come up: is there a God, does God hear our prayers and what results from those prayers? I’m not evangelical so having those conversations about prayer and the authenticity of Jesus, never result in a clear-cut answer. I don’t mind not having all the answers anymore. Let me rephrase that. I don’t mind not having all the answers, since I never did.
I know that Jesus of Nazareth was a real person, but whether we have his story completely accurate is a question I can’t answer. I do know that Jesus’ life in the Gospels inspires me and sometimes gives me strength. Strength to get up and do the things we have to do, and being able to admit some days we just don’t have it in us or we’re blocked by the unexpected, and that we need inspiration to come from a source outside of ourselves.
What is your source when life is just not going your way? On the series, Modern Family, Phil Dunphy, in his obscured logic, once said “when life hands you lemonade, make lemons.” Something about that seems true. There is no limit to what we can do if we believe in ourselves or like the women on the park bench, believe in the power of prayer. Faith doesn’t require an explanation. You don’t have to know where it came from. Just be thankful you have it.
PRAYER
Give me the courage to shout out your name from a park bench and the faith to know that you hear me. Amen
