SCRIPTURE
Ephesians 5: 1-2
Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
WORDS OF HOPE
Sometimes I do find it personally difficult to like folks who are unkind or mean spirited, and to this day, I can remember my mother saying, “if you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything at all”! While there doesn’t seem to be scriptural directives which command us to “like” everyone, there are many versus where we are told to love others. Actually, there are 2 simple great commandments, love God and love people. Jesus said most commandments hang on these scriptures which are the foundation to our faith.
Love God, Love people…that sounds easy until we hit a spiritual brick wall thinking if we don’t like someone how can we love them. That’s where Agape love can be exercised.
This type of love is not based on any conditions or expectations. It's a love that accepts and supports, regardless of circumstances or action. Agape love is lived out through actions. It involves acts of kindness, compassion, serving others, and forgiving, even when we don't feel like it.
The Bible tells us we can be assured of God’s love because Jesus gave his life for us. Since love is an action, not a feeling, we are free to love folks with whom we have no feelings at all. It’s a good thing God’s love is not based on feelings because that unconditional love towards us is constant, unwavering and eternal. When God asks us to keep the commandments of love, it is the same kind if love that God gives to us without expectations.
It appears in scripture Jesus did not like everyone when we read about his disdain for religious hypocrites and those who imposed injustice. Yet we know Jesus loved them because he sacrificed his life for ALL humankind, not just those he loved.
PRAYER
God, when we struggle with folks whom we don’t really like, let us, look past the feelings and demonstrate the actions of love we are called to share. In Jesus’ name, Amen
