SCRIPTURE
Philippians 3:17 (New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition)
Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us.
WORDS OF HOPE
“Living the Faith”
Paul had guts! Call it courage, ego, or “street cred,” the Apostle Paul courageously encouraged the Christian community living at Philippi to imitate him, and those who travelled with him, if they wanted to know what it meant to be a follower of Jesus. I find that both admirable and frightening.
I have pastored several Christian congregations over a span of three decades. At each of those churches I distinctly recall “hedging my bets” as a pastoral leader and role model. Upon arrival I introduced myself as an imperfect servant leader and admonished them not to put the pastor or my family on a pedestal. I told them that I preached the entire Gospel, not just the part that I could consistently live up to. I called them to aspirational living, serving and giving. Encouraging them to be, do and give more, even at times when I felt that I could be, do and share more than I did.
It is not my intention to be either self-effacing, or worse self-shaming, by what I’m telling you.
Perhaps I was striving for perfection and recognized that I frequently fell short. No human can be perfect. More importantly, I wanted to distinguish aspirational living from being perfect.
We simply cannot perfectly follow Jesus. Those who attempt to, or who practice perfectionism as a personality style, often become both self-destructive in their thinking, and simply annoying to most authentic people.
I believe that Paul’s intent was to offer an example of loving, serving, giving, and obedient Christian discipleship. Such an example may be perfectly imperfect, but it points to a better way in this “me-first,” “keep-all-the-money-you-can,” “only-look-out-for-your-own-self” type of culture that we live in.
Jesus came to show us a better way. When we reflect that, we are being as courageous as Paul in offering others the chance to follow.
PRAYER
Dear Jesus who loves us, help us we pray, to live life authentically, and follow Your Way. Amen.
