SCRIPTURE
Matthew 6:28-30
And why are you anxious about clothing? Observe the lilies of the field, how they grow: they do not toil or spin, but I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was dressed like one of these. But if God dresses the grass of the field in this way, although it is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not do so much more for you, you of little faith?
WORDS OF HOPE
I really don’t like figuring out what to wear every day.
Perhaps it’s because of my partial color blindness or that I don’t have much of an eye for fashion or that I don’t have enough space in my brain to follow style. From my childhood to now, I’m never quite sure what to wear for any given situation.
Figuring out what I’m going to put on for Sunday morning or an evening out is now complicated by recent weight loss. It means that my closet expanded, and I can wear things that I haven’t worn in a while. While that’s generally good, it also means that there are staples I’ve relied on over the past couple of years that are baggy and falling off my hips.
Oh, and one more complication… I belong to a church where the men generally know how to dress and look amazing every week. For this cis-gender, straight, middle-aged, color-blind simpleton, it can be a little intimidating. I’m quite scared of what would happen if Tan France were to see my closet. My Rangers jerseys are likely gone!
I’m grateful that Jesus tells me not to be anxious about clothing. It’s comforting to hear him say that lilies don’t work all that hard and look more glorious than Solomon. All that lilies have to do is be themselves to be beautiful. But this was never about clothing. It was and is about where to direct our priorities.
Throughout the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus turns our ideas about kingdom living upside down. Don’t seek revenge when you’re wronged. Give up those things that disrupt your relationship with God. Love your enemies and do good for them. Forgive your siblings first, then worship. And quit worrying about temporal things like clothes, because God knows that you need them.
“What is truly profound is thought to be stupid and trivial, or worse, boring, while what is actually stupid and trivial is thought to be profound”, writes Dallas Willard in the book The Divine Conspiracy. “That is what it means to fly upside down.”
Would that I could live my life where the thought of what I am going to wear doesn’t consume my thoughts. Or what I am going to eat. Or if I should forgive someone. Instead, can I live my life where my thoughts are directed to clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, and seeking reconciliation.
PRAYER
Your name be hallowed, with my words
Your Kingdom come, in my life
Your will be done, through my life
Daily bread, gratefully received and shared
Forgiveness given and received, with others and with myself
Amen.
