Ephesians 3:14-21
For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagineto him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
This is an amazing scripture. The writer was in prison when penning these words. I don’t imagine prison culture and treatment was any better then, than it is now. I have never been to prison, but our news media allows us to know it is an experience that would not inspire optimism. Despite his probable hunger, mistreatment, physical pain and discomfort, and restrictions, Paul is forging on with his ministry. He is praying for the readers to experience what he, obviously has for himself. He prays that they may experience strength in their “inner beings” through the power of the Holy Spirit. He prays that they have Christ in their hearts, and be “rooted and grounded” in love. He prays that they comprehend fully the love of Christ and be filled with the “all the fullness of God”
Can you sense how “full of God” Paul is? He must have experienced this incredible love of Christ for himself, to recommend it so highly to others.
As Paul closes his prayer for the church, he acknowledges God, who is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to God be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever.
Paul prayed for you and me, as well as the Ephesians. Paul knew the teachings of Jesus would reach through generations.
God of the greatest love of all, may we open ourselves to receive your love in all of its fullness. May we join with you to accomplish more than we have believed possible, more than we have dreamed could be. We love you, God. Amen.
