Galatians 2: 1-5
Then, after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem… because of a revelation, and set before the leaders the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain. But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery— to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.
WORDS OF HOPE
The leadership of Paul was counter cultural to the leadership of the current time. Paul had the task of presenting the Gospel to the Gentiles. However, Paul was a thorough person and ran it by the influential leaders before presenting it to the public. Paul wanted to make sure that all of his work had not gone to waste.
We see in this text the importance of being aware of our surroundings, as two spies had entered to observe the freedom, however, Paul and the Gentiles stayed true to the nature of the Gospel and did not let these spies distract them.
In these verses, three things happen: a great deal of ministry could be undone if the wrong message is portrayed, losing our freedom as Christians, and exchanging the truth of Christ for a lie. Yet, Paul’s integrity stays intact and he takes guarding the Gospel of Christ seriously!
The Gospel of Christ is there for everyone without exclusions. I think it is important for us to remember that God does not show favoritism! We are all God’s children and matter to God. It was requested by the community and leaders that they pay attention to the poor. In this New Year, it is important for us to be aware of our surroundings and help out others when we are able to do so. It seemed like the leaders and the community were slowly starting to listen to Paul and the Gospel of Christ that Paul was presenting.
PRAYER
Good and Gracious God, through the work of Jesus, you not only changed us but changed the world. This transformation continues to happen every day. When our leadership or integrity gets challenged, let us continue to have faith in you because you never forsake us or leave us. Grant us continued hope, mercy, and grace. Amen.
