Titus 1:5-9
Paul’s exhortations on leadership
…This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— If anyone is above reproach, the spouse of one spouce, and their children are Jesus’ followers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. They must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. And they also must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that they may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
WORDS OF HOPE
Prepare yourself by remembering that you are in the Presence of God taking a deep breath -breathing in goodness and light and then exhale slowly ridding yourself of personal concerns and troubles. And then do it all again calming your thoughts, clearing your mind to be able to listen better.
This letter gives us a great insight into Paul as he manages those who are disciples. His situation was not dissimilar from those who are in leadership today. We would be well to heed Paul’s approach to Titus – one of his lieutenants and his exhortations for finding the best leadership on the island of Crete.
His friend was greeted warmly while at the same time reminding the reader of his personal credentials to do this ministry. Titus is reminded about the responsibility he has and then Paul clearly articulates the characteristics required of leadership in the 1st century. Interestingly, today’s requirements are the same. Leadership must exhibit common sense and whose marriage must be sound. They “must not be bossy or ill-tempered, heavy drinkers or dishonest. They must be friendly to strangers and enjoy doing good things. They must be pure, sensible, fair and self-controlled.” What would the Church look like if these criteria were followed?
PRAYER
O Holy One! Help us to remember the sacrifice of those in leadership who shape their ministry as service-oriented. Servant leaders must be supported in their lives of sobriety, kindness, listening and supporting others. Keep them in your gentle hands and remind us of all that we can do to provide support,
We make this prayer in your many names, O God! AMEN!
