Scripture
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
This is what the ancients were commended for.
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Hebrews 11.1-3
A Word of Hope
As Cathedral of Hope steps into our 50th year as a church, we look back on all the times we had a hope for things we could not see! And our greatest desire is still that we can be a beacon of Hope for a world struggling to find a faith that brings them hope.
Our current building is a symbol of that hope! I hear stories all the time about how impossible it was to try to find a worship space. And how churches with buildings for sale would not sell them to a gay congregation! But buying land and building a new building was so expensive! It didn’t seem possible. But our early church members had faith that led them to build a Cathedral of Hope! Which is a beautiful facility for a lovely group of God’s people to gather for worship!
I doubt any of them could envision what we have now become! Not just a “gay” church, but a Vibrant Inclusive and Progressive congregation. I wonder if they could even dream of four services for adults and one for children happening every Sunday morning? Or 300 homeless people filling the fellowship hall every Saturday for breakfast? Or a Day School? Or housing for homeless gay youth!
This faith that provides Hope for things that cannot be seen or even be dreamed is a powerful tool for an amazing life! Those involved in taking the steps to reach unseen goals, reap a great reward when faith becomes sight!
I was not part of the congregation that sacrificed for our current building. I can’t imagine the joy of entering the new building for the first time as Faith really became visible. But I remember how I felt years later when I saw the space and felt the unconditional love!
So, whatever you are called to do, please step out on faith even if you can’t see the path ahead. Each step will bring you into a new vision of how God can work in your life to bring Hope to your corner of the world.
Prayer
God of faith that leads us to Hope, help us give a spark of hope to all we encounter in our lives. May each spark ignite more hope as we strive to make our world more like Heaven!
