The Cathedral of Hope has volunteered to help coordinate a combined response for the South Central Conference, United Church of Christ. This effort is beginning slowly as the Conference works to assess the damage and needs of those affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
Traditionally, the United Church of Christ acts as a '2nd responder', coming in after the emergency personnel to prepare, manage, and offer services to those who are working to get back on their feet and back to their lives and work. This work responding to Harvey and Irma will continue long after the disaster ends, and we need YOU to help!
Ways you can contribute:
There are many ways you can make a difference TODAY, and going forward:
Donate directly to the United Church of Christ relief effort for hurricanes Harvey and Irma. This allows for a single UCC entity to determine the best use for donations. You can donate directly from their webpage: http://www.ucc.org/disaster_hurricane_harvey
Donate to the Montrose Center - an LGBTQ Center where LGBTQ Houstonians can seek vital services. "The LGBTQ Disaster Relief Fund will be used to help individuals and families begin to rebuild their lives through counseling, case management, direct assistance with shelf stable food, furniture, housing and more. The Center’s dedicated case management team is on call to help homeless youth, seniors, people living with HIV, hate crime survivors, and those devastated by the storm." Shelters have been established throughout Dallas. While this week Dallas may be overflowing with volunteers, volunteers will be needed not just the coming days, but for weeks and months into the future. Create an acount with Voly.org and see how you can help today and in the days to come.
There are many in our congregation who are offering spare rooms to the most vulnerable in our community. If you are offering or seeking a place to stay, please contact Rev. Erin Wyma in the office of Congregational Care. Please call Cathedral of Hope at 214-435-1901.
Additionally, The DallasCityNews website suggests that you can sign up for AirBnB to help with Hurrcaine victims. You can see more here: http://www.dallascitynews.net/help-impacted-hurricane-harvey
